All throughout the Bible, God uses the image of the tabernacle to show us what it means to be in relationship with Him. The Bible begins with God walking in friendship with His image bearers, Adam and Eve. Despite their betrayal, God did not abandon His people in the desert. Instead, He pursued them and dwelt among them through the Tent of Meeting. This is where Israel would come to worship, to receive the Word of God, and to have their sins forgiven. When Jesus came, He pointed to Himself as the place where we now come to meet with God. He is the true Tabernacle. Jesus is God’s Word “in the flesh”, who offered Himself as a sacrifice to take away our sins and give us new life through His resurrection. As we dwell with Him (and “in” Him), we can look forward to the promise when God will one day “spread His tabernacle” over us in eternity (Revelation 7:15). Tabernacle began in 2002 with a belief that God wanted to grow His Kingdom in us and through us by planting a new church in Waynesboro, VA.  We began with a desire to be a place where God would “tabernacle” with us through the grace and truth of Jesus, and our vision remains the same today as it was then... The murals found in the church building were designed by Pastor Essen and created by elder Don Bailey to symbolize the themes of Glorification, Creation, Restoration, New Creation, and Mission with hope that our symbols will encourage you to see your life story more clearly through the lens of the gospel story. Essen and Cathy have four kids: Rachel, Sarah, Michael, and Lydia. Rachel and her husband, Kyle, live in New Mexico. Sarah is in Nashville, Michael is in Charlottesville, and Lydia is at JMU (Go Dukes!). He enjoys creating artwork, birthday cakes, and good dinners. He also has an embarrassing affinity for Star Wars Legos (Matthew 7:1-2).   He is a graduate of James Madison University and Reformed Theological Seminary. Kyle is married to his best friend, Ginny, and together they are continuously learning how to be parents for their boys, Drew and Sam.   Kyle is responsible for facilitating and encouraging the ministry teams at Tab with special focus on small groups and adult discipleship.   He enjoys the outdoors, reading, and watching the Cowboys defeat the Redskins on a fairly regular basis. He was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas.  Prior to coming to Tab, Taylor and his wife, Denise, lived in Nashville, Tennessee for 12 years. Taylor graduated from Belmont University with a Master's Degree in Music and is currently enrolled at Reformed Theological Seminary, pursuing an M.Div. and ordination. One of his greatest joys is spending time with Denise and their three children - twin sons, Judah and Pierce, and daughter, Lily. Taylor loves writing songs for the church and leading the saints in the worship of God. Teresa is the administrative assistant for Tabernacle's church office. Born and raised in Ohio, Teresa came to the Valley in 1992 from Philadelphia, where she taught middle and high school English. Before coming to Tabernacle, she taught English locally, worked with special needs kids, was a bookkeeper for a family business, and served several years as Children's Ministries Support. She enjoys her two grown sons, reading, studying, working with her hands, traveling, and Ohio State Football. Wendy was transplanted to Virginia about 10 years ago after being born and raised in New Hampshire. She and her husband Abe have seven children. She has a degree in elementary education and her love for children makes her a great fit as our nursery coordinator.   Wendy loves learning new things, and her most recent adventures include gardening and chocolatiering. Jennifer was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley before living in coastal Maine for 17 years. She graduated from the University of Maine with a B.A. in Social Sciences. After moving back to Virginia in 2011, she met her husband, Brian. They are now raising a smart and highly active son, John Braydon, in Staunton. It is always primary because without Him, we could do nothing (John 1:14; 1 Corinthians 1:30). He created us, saved us through Christ, and restores us through the Spirit. Anything we have accomplished or will accomplish depends on His gracious provision and enablement. His glory is our chief concern (Isaiah 26:8) and our greatest delight (Psalm 16:11). God’s glory is not something we disinterestedly seek out of mere duty. Obedience and sacrifice and carrying our cross are all necessary, but only so that we can possess what is truly enjoyable—Him (Matthew 13:44). Fundamentally, the Church exists for the nurturing and building up of the saints (Galatians 6:10). We are a family, and a family rejoices together and also grieves together. We respond and we love and we serve in order to be an expression of God’s love to one another, fulfilling our calling as the interdependent Body of Christ. **but how many churches have taken this principle of self-nurture as its only purpose and become ingrown?** The Lord would also have us exist for the blessing of our community (Galatians 5:14; Jeremiah 29:7). His purpose was not only to save us from death, but to fill us so that we might overflow with new life! At Tabernacle, we describe this from three angles—eternal life, internal life, and external life. Jesus came in order to restore our relationship with God. He hung on the cross to forgive our sins and He rose from the dead to give us new life.  By faith in Him, we can experience an eternity of blessing with God in His new creation, free from the curse of sin and death. Our pride, lust, rage, and despair all result from a self-centered life. The universe wasn’t made to revolve around us.  But with Jesus at the center, our internal world becomes more peaceful and joyful as we learn to love and serve Him. Jesus tells us to love our neighbor. Generosity, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness flow from a heart that has been renewed.  The gospel compels us to minister to the world around us in order to see God’s kingdom come and His will done “on earth as it is in heaven.” We are a church that believes Jesus Christ is at the center of everything and that His gospel ought to govern every aspect of our lives. We want every woman to know Christ personally and be committed to extending His kingdom in her life, home, church, community and throughout the world. Click each picture to learn more about the Women's Ministry leadership: Katie spent her childhood in a variety of places - Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut before her family settled in Charlotte, North Carolina for her teenage years. She attended the UNC-Chapel Hill for undergrad and afterwards moved to Charlottesville to complete her Master’s in Teaching at the UVa. Since then, Katie has worked in Albemarle Public Schools as a bilingual immersion Spanish teacher. Katie met her husband Parker in 2018 and they married in 2020 - right in the middle of the pandemic! Katie and Parker have been members of Tabernacle PCA for 4 years. They live in Stuarts Draft with their 2 cats and flock of chickens. The Dells have an adorable, energetic toddler and are expecting another baby in October 2025. Katie is now home with her daughter and does some tutoring on the side.  Her hobbies include: swing dancing, board games, reading, and occasionally sewing. She and Parker love to travel and explore new places. Katie is excited to begin serving in Women's Ministry and is hopeful that her organizational and leadership skills from the workplace will translate well into helpful contributions at Tab. Katie is most passionate about looking for ways to include and serve women who feel on the fringes of the church community. Please feel free to reach out anytime! Jeanne grew up in rural Georgia where she accepted Christ as a teen in a revival meeting. She went to college at Emory University in Atlanta and met her husband, Mike, on a blind date – evidence that God works His will in all sorts of ways. There she and Mike were a part of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and feel so blessed to have had that guidance in their lives. After graduating with a B.A. in math, Mike and Jeanne got married and moved to West Lafayette IN where Mike received a PhD in clinical psychology at Purdue. Since graduate school, they have lived mostly in the South, and ended up in a suburb of Atlanta where they raised their three children. For years Jeanne was a stay-at-home mother and homemaker (with hobbies of reading, collecting baby dolls, and antiquing), but eventually began helping out at Mike's workplace and ended up being the office manager for his private practice. They are retired now and have eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Late in life they abandoned Atlanta and all its congestion to come to the Shenandoah Valley where they have two of their children fairly nearby. They love the pace of life here and Tab where they have been members since summer of 2023. Jeanne grew up Methodist, accepted Christ in a Baptist church, but has found her true home in the Reformed Faith as a PCAer since 1977. This is her first foray into women's leadership in the church – better late than never. Ann has lived in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley most of her life. She and her husband, Harry, joined Tab in 2010 after an invitation to attend by neighbors, Elgene and Marty Johnson. For 25 years, Ann taught in the Augusta County public school system, elementary, middle, and secondary levels and after retirement served as a Hospice of the Shenandoah patient care volunteer for 17 years. She has been singing with the Waynesboro Choral Society as long as she has been married, forty one years. She enjoys being outdoors, walking her 2 dogs, bicycling, and has a fondness for most all of God's creatures. Reading and playing the piano keep her busy too. Ann looks forward to serving the women of Tab, her church and community. Ashwynn is a Doctor of Optometry who brings both vision and heart to her role as Women’s Fellowship and Events Coordinator at Tabernacle. Originally from North Carolina, she moved to Crozet, Virginia, with her husband, Burt, in 2018.  The couple joined Tabernacle in 2023—a day made even more meaningful as it was not only her birthday, but also the day she was baptized.  Ashwynn and Burt, married for 21 years, want to be intentional about serving and connecting with others at Tab.  Ashwynn is passionate about making things beautiful, whether it’s a thoughtfully arranged bouquet, a perfectly plated meal, or a batch of handmade sugar cookies for friends. She delights in the little details and sees beauty as a reflection of God’s creativity. When she’s not working or planning gatherings, she enjoys lifting weights, watching birds, or curling up with a book—her two beloved French Bulldogs nestled contentedly in her lap. With a heart for connection and encouragement, Ashwynn is eager to walk alongside the women of Tabernacle, creating spaces for fellowship, celebration, and spiritual growth. Her favorite verse, Matthew 6:21—“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”—reminds her to keep her heart anchored in eternal treasures. Mary Beth was born in Virginia and has lived in many parts of the United States including a few years in Vientiane, Laos. She grew up in the Presbyterian Church attending Sunday School and the Youth Choir. After attending college and majoring in social work, she began her career in the medical social work field specializing in hospital case management, hospice, home health and bereavement.  She and her spouse, Dean raised 4 children who are all grown with families of their own. Dean and Mary Beth have also been foster and adoptive parents. They now have 4 dogs and one foster dog needing medical care. She also is a volunteer as a rescue transport driver for shelter dogs.  She enjoys travel, time with family, refurbishing old furniture, walking the dogs and gardening.  Her favorite Bible verse is from Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. We believe that God wants us to grow and multiply. Our mission (the means by which we intend to see our vision for Tabernacle realized) is to “enlarge the place of our tent” and to “spread out to the right and to the left”. As we grow and multiply, we can spread more of the blessings of Christ’s Kingdom to new neighborhoods and to the nations. One percent of our community does not sound like much until you do the math. Our community is projected to grow to 120,000 people in the next few years, and we want to see 1,200 of them living and growing as disciples through Tabernacle. But we also believe that multiplication, not just growth, is the biblical way to make and grow disciples. Church planting is the missional strategy of the New Testament. So rather than grow Tabernacle to well over 1,000 members, we pray God will use us to plant a bunch of 200-300 members churches. Most leaders agree that six churches with 200 members will make a greater impact than one church with 1,200 members. And by God’s grace, Tabernacle was able to plant our first daughter church in 2009, Holy Cross PCA in Staunton. We started as a multisite church (one church in two locations) and then spun it off as a daughter church (two churches in two locations) with its own leadership. We are praying for God to lead us to our next location for another daughter church. Equipping Leaders International | Malawi (based in U.S.) **We support additional missionaries in sensitive countries** The Gospel is being shared in hostile environments where it is unsafe to post missionary names and locations.  Please pray for these families as they risk to serve a great need for the Good News of Jesus. Expand each section to find recordings and resources related to each conversation. **How should we as Christians define Israel and what is our responsibility to Israel?** Our nation is growing more divided. **How do we as Christians navigate these trying times?** Whose side should we be on, if any? What are our responsibilities to our nation as Christians? Each week, we wrestle through these important questions. **The Gospel provides us with direction, comfort, and hope as we struggle to live as Christian citizens in a foreign land.** We are living in the digital age, in a time of many technological advancements. While it is a time full of innovation and excitement, it is also full of speculation and concern. **How are we to navigate this period of history as Christians?** Addictions come in many forms. **Worship is at the heart of addiction.** When we fail to worship God alone, we are prone to worship ourselves and our desires. **All of us can become addicts.**  People suffering through addiction feel helpless and hopeless. Does it have to be this way? No!  **Jesus is the Great Physician.**  He can heal anyone of their addiction. Jesus came to set us free! There has been a lot of news about how churches have mishandled cases of domestic abuse within their congregations. The church should be a sanctuary, a place of healing and support. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. How can we be better equipped to **recognize and respond to abuse in a way that honors Jesus and reflects His love and compassion for the oppressed**? How does our identity shape the way we live our lives?  These are fundamental questions that affect every area of our lives.  **These are also questions that Jesus has a lot to say about.** Why are so many young people leaving the church of their youth? Has the church lost its way? There is a new brand of Christianity, called **Progressive Christianity**, that is **drawing more and more people away from the church**.  What does Progressive Christianity teach and promise? Why is it so attractive to so many in our culture? Should this be something our church embraces? How does Jesus want us to think and live regarding our gender?  What does it mean to be created as a **man or a woman in the image of God**? Consider our calling, our offense, our challenge, and our opportunity as a predominantly white church. It is a **worthy challenge** to step out of our white bubble and **grow deeper in the Gospel**. “Jesus and Homosexuality” is a deliberate title to this miniseries.  At stake here is discipleship—what does it look like to follow Jesus? **How can we glorify Jesus by what we think and say and do regarding the issue of homosexuality?**  Bringing Jesus into the discussion of homosexuality reminds us that this is not just a spiritual or religious issue. It keeps us honest. Expect the unexpected. Everyone wants to put his or her best foot forward. We thought maybe you would appreciate some transparency. but not to be clones without independent thought or expression, but to be new people who love and serve Jesus Christ with all that they uniquely are. but we are doing our best to repent of our failures and to love and live the way Jesus calls us. but then again, everyone is uptight about something. We try to be uptight about good things like grace and truth, mercy and justice, love and faithfulness. Not only do we believe that God welcomes our questions, but that He also wants us to apply a healthy skepticism toward our worldly assumptions. and we are asking you to judge for yourself: the issue is not if we will make judgments, but how we will make them. after all, if you were really convinced that the Divine Being had said and did something that would benefit all humanity, wouldn’t you want the world to know? no question about it. We honestly do wrestle with pride and ego every single day, but we are also genuinely seeking to live with greater humility. Lord have mercy! we are no intellectual or cultural epicenter, but we do aspire to love the Lord with all our minds. If you join us, maybe you could help sharpen our perspective on some things. but not to waste it or to pad the pastor’s pocket. Instead, we wish to leverage our God-given resources to care for each other and to bless our community. and we know there are sad stereotypes tied up with that description. But we embrace it anyway because it reminds us that God has made us part of His new creation. It reminds us that He has called us to be a part of making all things new, as a foretaste of the new heaven and new earth to come. **We want to see “His kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven”, and we invite you to join us as we seek to be a part of His great and good plan to do so!** Our first service begins at 8:30am. Our second service begins at 11:00am. Please arrive early enough that you can get settled in the sanctuary and prepare your heart to worship before the service starts. Our sermons are full of Scripture and incorporate expository and thematic approaches to any given series. Our goal in any sermon is to be reminded of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to have it applied to our hearts and lives so that we may live joyfully for God’s glory. Musically, we love to sing and believe that it is important to raise our voices together in worship and praise. We use a blend of traditional hymns from our denomination’s Trinity Hymnal and modern contemporary music. We use traditional hymns set to modern tunes as well. Worship is regularly led by a team of people with piano and guitar accompaniment and with additional instruments as musicians are available. We celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism whenever a family presents their covenant child before the Lord, and whenever a person who has not yet been baptized becomes a follower of Jesus Christ. We celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of every month. In addition, prayer, creeds, offerings, responsive readings, and testimonies are all important elements in our worship services. During the 11AM service, we have a staffed nursery available for **infants through age two** and an ID tag system to identify parents, children and carry bags. Please sign in with the staff and communicate any needed info for proper care. For children **age three through First Grade**, we have a Children’s Church that meets each week during the 11:00am service (except for the first Sunday of each month). The children are dismissed to Children’s Church at the beginning of the sermon and parents should come to pick up children at the end of the worship service. If you or your children are more comfortable staying together with you for the entire service, that is encouraged. We do have a cry room available at the rear of the sanctuary with one-way glass and internal audio to use for restless little ones and for nursing moms. Our congregation covers a broad range of dress—some are wearing tie-dye and some are in neck ties. Please keep in mind that we want to focus on worship of our Lord, so wear what you would be comfortable in without causing distraction to others. We would love the opportunity to welcome you personally, but we don’t ask our visitors to stand up in front of everyone and speak or introduce themselves. We try to operate our sound system at a level that is comfortable for everyone, but if you need a little more boost in volume, we have a hearing assistance system available. Please ask one of the ushers at the door or see the audio technician for a radio receiver. There in a volume control on each unit that you can set for your own hearing needs. We have an ADA-compliant ramp from the parking lot to the upper level and sanctuary that bypasses the stairs in front of the building. We also have an accessible restroom in the foyer between the old and new buildings, but there is no elevator or chair lift to the Fellowship Hall level. Please see an usher or deacon for any assistance you may need and we will do our best to provide it. If you are visiting with us, please know that it is okay to pass the plate on by. Our members and regular attenders support the church with their tithes and offerings. There is absolutely no expectation that our visitors need to contribute money to our church. We will host a 3-day VBS for the many Colombian kids who attend El Rendentor to help them and us grow in our love for Jesus. We will participate in outreach to kids in the local community by helping with the ministry called Amor Genuino. We will engage with college students by taking part in English Club, a key strategy for reaching students at the local university. A ministry team comprised of adults and high school age students work with a larger team of volunteers from churches across the U.S. to serve missionary families, their children, national pastors and Japanese locals who will be gathering from every corner of Japan for the Renown Japan Church Planting Institute Conference. Faithful to the call, many missionaries work tirelessly, often in isolation far away from their own cultural comforts. As a result, burn-out and discouragement often plague the missionaries and their families. It is important for them to get away for a season of renewal to stay current, relevant, and focused in their ministry. Japan Church Planting International (CPI) Renown conference is an opportunity for missionaries to meet for a time of training, fellowship, and spiritual renewal.
